This is the personal website of Chris Roberts, Computer Systems Engineer.
From the age of 6, I was fascinated with technology. At the time it was my Dad’s little word processing machine which you could program in BASIC if you wanted to. I moved to phones, the early mobile phones – BBSes and other dial in services which I began to explore with my Amiga 1200 and accompanying modem. I started to write code, in a number of cases to get the most out of the games which I had gathered. I had a bit of a flair in using graphics on the Amiga – sadly I cannot remember a lot of it. From that I moved to Macintosh’s, the Performa 5200. I wrote code on it, and played with sound editing and other such multimedia toys. From there I got my first PC, racked up huge phone bills and a geek was born.
I love to explore. Exploring systems to exploring the world. I love to find new and useful ways to do things, and overall I want to benefit the world as a whole.
I’m doing a degree in Computer Systems Engineering at University of Kent. I specialise in embedded systems development, including designing and building systems using microprocessors, like PICs and AVRs. My second year group project was an automated weather balloon, which included GPS tracking and atmospheric measurement, using a PIC microcontroller as the central processor. My third year project is a FreeRTOS port to PIC24H based microcontroller development board.
I’m a technical volunteer for a Canterbury Student Radio, and work on bringing online all of the services they provide including FM transmission, online streaming as well as outside broadcasts and the IT infrastructure which keeps the station running.
